The Atlanta International Area Rug Market Wednesday, July 13 – Saturday, July 16, 2016 Atlanta, GA   Wednesday July 13, 2016 The Atlanta International Area Rug Market opens   9:00AM – 11:30AM ORRA Board of Directors Meeting 2:00PM – 3:00PM Walking the Market with Phil Menendian and ORRA members. This walk will include the new antique presentation on the second floor temporary exhibits along with a walk throughout the rug market highlighting select vendors with new offering and unique presentations. AmericasMart Building 1, 4th Floor, RM 4-B-1   Thursday July 14, 2016 10:00AM – 11:30AM “Knot To Be Missed” Presenter: Rich Amatulli assisted by a panel of rug experts. The Topic is Modern Turkish Rugs with a focused discussion titled the “Truth about Ushaks”. The subject will be a first hand account of market activities as experienced by Interior Designers and other related trade members. A must attend if you sell, buy or appraise Ushaks and other Turkish rugs. AmericasMart Building 1, 4th Floor. Seminar Room 4-B-1   1:00PM – 1:30PM “Enhancing Your Rug Appraising” with a panel of CRAs headed by Jim Garner. As part of the new ORRA education program an open forum will address the discipline associated with rug appraising in today’s marketplace. Current appraisal techniques will be briefly reviewed.   2:00PM – 4:00PM “CRA Examination” Written Portion with Jim Garner and the education committee members. ORRA Announces New President and New Look

The Oriental Rug Retailers Association (ORRA) announced that they have adopted a new logo and appointed a new president. At its January 2015 meetings ORRA elevated Rob Leahy of FINE RUGS OF CHARLESTON to a two year term as the organization’s leader. Upon his appointment Rob said, “I am pleased and honored to be chosen as the new President of ORRA. Over the last three years, as a board member, I have come to appreciate the persevering work of our retiring President, Rich Amatulli. Rich will continue as my Membership Chairman and advisor. Over those years I have gained the friendship of the other members of our board. I look forward to working with them in the coming years.” At the upcoming Atlanta International Area Rug Market the organization will begin to do business as ‘ORRA ~ A Rug Education Association’. This name change will become permanent, once ratified by its membership, and underscores the board’s commitment to education. A fresh new logo has been designed and approved for use beginning in July 2015. Shortly, members will see a new, much improved website that will provide many instructive tools designed to help members and the member’s staff to improve their rug knowledge. In other important news, ORRA has refreshed the Certified Rug Appraiser program endeavoring to make acquisition of the highly valued CRA the goal of all members. The organization has initiated a Certified Rug Professional (CRP) designation which will be awarded to members who pass the written portion of the certification process while preparing for the rug identification portion of the CRA. Speaking about the future, Rob added, “With the board, I look forward to helping guide the organization towards renewed relevance and sustained growth. I have been in and around the rug trade since 1971 and have a range of experiences that shape my vision of the direction that accomplishes these goals.” ORRA has a full agenda of events and seminars, many which are designed to prepare members for the CRA examination. Armen C. Babaian Passes At Age 57

The ORIA is saddened to report the passing of Armen C. Babaian of Chesterfield, MO who died suddenly on Oct. 1, 2014. Long-time rug merchant, Babaian was past president and permanent Board Member of the ORRA. He was the beloved husband of Annemarie Babaian, nee Ruprecht; dear brother of Alex (Debbie) Babaian and Diane Babain. Brother-in-law of Art (Nancy), Stephen (Lisa) and Danny (Natalie) Ruprecht, Cyndi Hunt and Maureen Fadem, son-in-law of Mary Ruprecht, and also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. ORRA Announces Event Schedule For July Market

Friday July 13, 2012 – 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. “In the Dragons’ Shadow: Dragon Rugs and the Legacy of their Patterns” Presented by Paul Ramsey, CRA. A fascinating glimpse into the foggy notions of the Dragon rugs of Azerbaijan (the Caucasus and northwest Iran), and how have they been a source of inspiration for many later rugs from this area. We will look at the origins of dragon rugs, understand their basic patterns, and look at their influence into 19th and 20th Century Kazak and other Caucasian designs. Paul, a long time ORRA member, has been a retailer and importer of rugs for over 35 years, travelling widely in Turkey, Afghanistan and Iran. He prefers to think of himself, with respect to rugs generally, tribal rugs and dragon rugs, as regionally and even internationally un-known. He is currently learning Chinese, and Chinese calligraphy, and studies ancient Chinese poetry.
